Asian NATO proposal by Japan’s Ishiba seen as ‘fantasy’ in U.S.

WASHINGTON — A NATO-style collective security arrangement in Asia proposed by Shigeru Ishiba, Japan's former defense minister and current prime ministerial candidate, has received a cold reception in the United States.

An Indo-Pacific official in the Biden administration told Nikkei Asia that an Asian NATO “is not what we are looking for in the region.”
