Australian senator upholds motion denying China’s UN claim to Taiwan

SYDNEY — Australian Senator David Fawcett on Monday defended a motion he recently co-sponsored criticizing China's attempts to claim sovereignty over Taiwan.

Fawcett said the proposal is intended to protect the regional status quo against the possibility of China taking a unilateral step to try to overtake Taiwan by force. “If we allow someone to abuse other nations because they're economically strong or militarily strong, we're all going to be worse off,” Fawcett told Nikkei Asia.
