BYD, Geely soar in China’s crowded field as state carmakers slump

GUANGZHOU — BYD and Geely Automobile Holdings were among China's top private carmakers to report profit growth in the January-June half, while SAIC Motor and other state-owned operators struggled in a crowded market.

BYD saw its net profit rise 24% year-on-year to 13.6 billion yuan ($1.9 billion), a record for the first half and the highest among 10 leading Chinese automakers reporting results in late August. Car sales increased by 28% to 1.61 million units.
