Can Sharp build EVs that wow? R&D slowdown stands in the way

OSAKA — Sharp's plan to enter the electric car business is facing hurdles such as declining patent filings and R&D spending, as well as being in the red for two consecutive years, raising questions about its ability to finance and develop cutting-edge technology.

Sharp, known primarily as an electronics and home appliance maker, plans to move into electric cars in the next few years in partnership with Taiwanese parent company Hon Hai Precision Industry, or Foxconn.
