China factory activity contracts for fifth straight month in September

HONG KONG — China's manufacturing activity shrank for a fifth straight month in September, but policymakers are hoping to turn things around with a series of stimulus measures announced last week.

The National Bureau of Statistics announced on Monday that the country's benchmark purchasing managers' index rose to 49.8 for the month. The reading rose from 49.1 in August and beat the median forecast of 49.5 in a Reuters poll.
