China’s Black Myth attracts players, brands and game-averse Communists

HONG KONG — The biggest launch of a Chinese console video game has sparked a flurry of business activity, both legitimate and shady, as even authorities, usually skeptical of gaming, are trying to capitalize on the enthusiasm.

Since its official global launch for PlayStation 5 and PC on Tuesday, the Tencent-backed single-player role-playing game Black Myth: Wukong has risen to become the most played game on Steam, the PC platform. The number of concurrent players reached 2.36 million, the second highest number of all time behind PUBG: Battlegrounds, another Tencent-related hit, with 3.26 million people.
