Deepfakes explode in Japan, tearing down language barrier

TOKYO — The use of deepfakes by fraudsters in Japan has increased, according to private sector data, suggesting that the language barrier no longer provides protection against global fraudsters.

According to Sumsub, a British identity verification services company, the number of deep-pocketed fraud cases in Japan increased 28-fold last year. The increase was the fifth largest among the 224 economies tracked.
