Dissanayake’s journey from toffee seller to Sri Lankan president

THAMBUTTEGAMA, Sri Lanka — Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake dissolved parliament on Tuesday evening, with general elections scheduled for November 14. With his party currently having just three members in the legislature, he is looking to strengthen his power base. a highly unusual move to schedule elections immediately after taking office.

During his presidential campaign, Dissanayake distinguished himself from his rivals by reminding Sri Lankans still reeling from the lingering effects of the 2022 economic crisis that he too came from poverty.
