EV benefits elude U.S. Rust Belt swing states as election nears

NEW YORK/WASHINGTON — The Biden administration's efforts to boost U.S. electric vehicle production took another step Friday with a tariff increase on Chinese electric vehicles, but the Rust Belt says the measures are on target.

The 100% tariff on electric cars — based on tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump — is accompanied by higher tariffs on components such as batteries and steel, all designed to keep China's oversupply from flooding the United States. The administration is offering large subsidies to encourage companies to build electric vehicles here.
