German vote against EV tariffs undercuts EU’s tougher China stance

HAMBURG, Germany — Germany voted against planned import duties on Chinese-made electric cars on Friday, in a move that deepened a standoff between Europe's biggest economy and the European Commission.

Berlin's resistance, echoed by diplomats in Brussels, was not enough to sway the overall vote for tariffs, backed by France and Italy. But it shows China has more room to negotiate in favor of its auto industry.
