Developer Gorilla TagOne of VR's most popular and commercially successful games has revealed the first clear look at its next game. Previously codenamed 'Project AR', the game has officially Orion Drift, and aims to get Gorilla Tag to take the social structure to the next level.
Another Axion is the independent studio behind the game. Gorilla TagThe viral VR game took on a life of its own and has generated more than $100 million in revenue, making it one of VR's most successful games.
And while most studios would be reluctant to spoil such a huge success with their own new game, that seems to be exactly what Another Axiom is looking to do. Orion DriftA newly released trailer shows how it will work.
Orion Drift builds on Gorilla Tag’s signature arm-based movement system, but players will inhabit robot bodies instead of gorillas. But this simple avatar change is far from the disruptive part. The game, Gorilla Tag seamless social lobby navigation and 'playground' gameplay, and cranked up to 11.
Orion Drift It promises to feature space stations where up to 200 players can roam around at once. The space stations consist of multiple large arena areas where players can play a variety of different games, from a game not too far removed from 'Gorilla Tag' itself to 'Tackleball', which is very similar to football. Rocket RaceBut of course you have to use your hands to move and control the ball.
We also get a look at another part of the station, which has what looks like a golf course and pickleball courts, and another area that hosts an event called the 'Scrap Run', which is like an obstacle race.
While that's already more than enough space for activities, there are at least seven additional large modules shown to be 'under construction' on the cylindrical space station; the implication is that all of these will be filled to support more unique activities and game modes.
And there may even be players building the rest of the station. Another Axiom previously said about the game “[…] He mentioned plans for a level editor where players will be able to “manage their own servers, control their own stations, host their own rulesets, manage and customize the look and feel of activities, posters, game modes, and more” as well as allowing players to create their own maps and activities.
And as if that wasn't enough, at the end of the trailer the camera pulls back to reveal not just one floating station, but about 20 more floating together in space.
This is an ambitious concept that is clearly inspired by the perfect social structure. Gorilla Tag, Where game lobbies are 'spaces' and changing game modes feels as natural as moving between rooms.
Inside Orion DriftHowever, the idea might not just be to wander down a hallway and enter a new room, but to traverse a space station full of people and even hop from station to station to find new game modes and people.
For now, Another Axiom is calling this first look a “development snapshot” consisting of “early gameplay footage.” There are no firm plans for a release just yet, but the studio is taking sign-ups for a closed early access period on its official Discord.
