ISLAMABAD/NEW DELHI — Tensions are rising between India and Pakistan over the decades-old Indus Water System Treaty after Islamabad recently rejected New Delhi's request to revise the terms.
India notified Pakistan in late August that it intended to review the 64-year-old Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), but Islamabad said it was against the existing agreement. At the heart of the dispute is India's plans to build the Kishanganga and Ratle hydroelectric dams in Jammu and Kashmir, but on rivers controlled by Pakistan.
