JAKARTA — Indonesian President Joko Widodo on Wednesday broke ground on Jakarta's second metro line, which will eventually extend 84 kilometers to neighboring provinces, as the government aims to decongest the capital and develop suburbs.
The East-West Line of Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), which runs from Cikarang in West Java to Balaraja in Banten, will be much longer than the existing North-South Line, which was first opened in 2019 and is currently 15.7 km long. Compared to the first line, which only connects the main points of the capital, the new line is expected to attract more users with a wider coverage, including industrial districts and suburban areas.
