Japan election campaign kicks off; 465 lower house seats up for grabs

TOKYO — The campaign period for Japan's general election officially began on Tuesday, giving candidates 12 days to go to the polls and collectively choose the party or parties that will form the next government on Oct. 27.

289 out of 465 seats in the lower house will go to politicians directly elected from single constituencies. Another 176 winners will be elected by the proportional representation system, which divides the country into 11 constituencies.
