Japan interest rates, defense buildup push budget requests above $800bn

TOKYO — Budget requests by Japanese government agencies for fiscal 2025 have soared to more than 117 trillion yen ($807 billion), according to the Nikkei, as debt service and defense spending soar.

The Ministry of Finance will review these proposals and prepare the draft budget to be prepared by the end of the year. Items related to wage increases and inflation cuts could push the total higher, as many were presented without specific monetary figures.
