Japan leadership hopefuls eye tougher responses to airspace breaches

TOKYO — As the race to choose the next leader and likely prime minister of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party enters its final stages, recent military provocations by China and Russia have focused on deterrence.

A Russian reconnaissance plane entered Japanese airspace three times in three hours on Monday with the bomb bay doors open. Fighter jets from the Japan Air Self-Defense Force fired flares to warn an aircraft, going beyond the initial reactions of takeoff jets and radio warnings.
