Japan to hold general election on Oct. 27, testing new prime minister

TOKYO — Shigeru Ishiba, president of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and likely new prime minister, said Monday he will dissolve the lower house and hold a general election on Oct. 27.

The general election will test public confidence in the LDP, which has been decimated by the party's political finance scandal, as well as Ishiba as the new prime minister to tackle the problem.
