Japan wants more rural data centers, and light-based networks may help

TOKYO — The Japanese government plans to support high-speed, light-based communications technology that could help build more data centers outside major cities, the Nikkei has learned.

Assistance, which will include subsidies, could begin early next year. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry will discuss the proposals this month.
