Japanese politicians’ vow to up minimum wage by 40% raises concerns

TOKYO — In the final sprint to Japan's Oct. 27 general election, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and the main political parties have vowed to raise the minimum hourly wage to levels that experts say will put more strain on small and medium-sized businesses.

The campaign promises come as the country faces labor shortages and consumers feel the pinch of higher prices.
