Japan’s Kao goes upmarket with premium hair care

TOKYO — Japanese health and beauty company Kao is shaking up its hair care business with a high-end line as it loses out to newer brands and moves away from the mass-market products that made it popular.

New luxury hair care brand The Answer will launch on November 2, Kao said Thursday. The brand's shampoo and conditioner will cost ¥1,760 ($12) each, nearly double the company's standard products.
