Japan’s LDP kicks off leadership race to pick Kishida successor

TOKYO — Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party began a two-week campaign on Thursday to replace Prime Minister Fumio Kishida as its next leader as it seeks to restore public trust eroded by a political finance scandal.

The race to elect a new party president to replace Kishida in the role means the LDP will dominate the legislature as the majority party when Japan's Diet parliament reconvenes early next month.
