Japan’s prime minister race clashes with U.N., ASEAN summit season

TOKYO — Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party's leadership race to replace Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is timed to coincide with a busy diplomatic schedule and could potentially affect his successor's ability to attend an ASEAN summit in October and other important international meetings.

LDP members will elect Kishida's successor in party presidential elections scheduled for September 27. It will take about a week for the new prime minister to form a cabinet.
