Japan’s rice demand rises amid record tourist numbers

TOKYO — Japan's rice demand rose for the first time in a decade on the back of a record number of tourists and strong domestic demand, which has led to shortages and buying restrictions.

A rare surge in demand has led to sacks of rice disappearing from some supermarkets, along with produce damaged by the heat wave. Distributors have moved to raise the price of Japan's staple food products.
