Japan’s ruling LDP begins prime minister race: 5 things to know

TOKYO — Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) officially announced the start of a two-week presidential race on Thursday to choose the next leader of the largest political party after Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Voting and counting of ballots is scheduled for September 27.

The winner of the election will be appointed Japan's 102nd prime minister in the Diet, where the party has the most seats in both the upper and lower houses. The next session of the Parliament is expected to be held in early October.
