Kiribati presidential voting starts with pro-China incumbent in focus

SYDNEY — Polls opened Friday in Kiribati's presidential election, with pro-China incumbent Taneti Maamau seeking a third and final term amid intensifying geopolitical competition in the Pacific.

Maamau, 64, is up against two political newcomers, both first-time members of parliament running under Maamau's own ruling Tobwan Kiribati Party (TKP).
