'Minecraft' Will Drop PSVR Players Next Year, PSVR 2 Support Highly Doubtful

Mojang studio owned by Microsoft Minecraftannounced that it will end support for the original PSVR next year, completely destroying hopes for PSVR 2 support.

As stated in the latest 1.21.30 (Bedrock) build notes, Mojang says that starting in March 2025, PSVR users will no longer be able to play games Minecraft With PSVR. Not online or single player.

“After receiving the latest update, you will continue to receive updates on your PlayStation and will be able to play without PlayStation VR,” the studio says.

PSVR support Minecraft It arrived as a free update to the PS4 version in September 2020, allowing users to play the full game with DualShock controllers and not the PS Move.

The best-selling game in history, PSVR was essentially the only VR title with true premium support from Mojang; the Meta PC version was delisted after dropping support in 2021, and the only recommended way to play on PC VR is through the Vivecraft Java Edition mod.

Moreover, Minecraft It's currently in beta on PS5, but Mojang hasn't mentioned whether PSVR 2 support is on the horizon, dampening any hopes that such support could come after today's news.

While Mojang has yet to make a statement on the matter (and this is just my opinion), the main reasons why PSVR 2 support seems unlikely include the headset's relatively small user base and a few other factors.

Sony's waning confidence in the PSVR 2 led the company to release a tethered PC VR adapter in August, ending its exclusivity to the PS5 gaming ecosystem. This came just a year and a half after the PSVR 2 was released, leading some to believe the company was partially giving up on its latest VR headset.

What's notable is that the company didn't pump up the PSVR 2 like it did with the 2016 original. Sony only released a few exclusive games, including The Horizon Call of the Mountainand VR support Resident Evil Village, Gran Turismo 7 And Resident Evil 4 remake.

Then there's Mojang's parent company, Microsoft, which has been pretty cautious about VR games in general over the years. The company is not only pulling the plug on its social VR platform in 2023 Subspace VRbut it also dropped support for the entire WMR platform on Windows.

Of course, Mojang hasn't ruled out PSVR 2 support entirely, but it seems unlikely that it will happen on the PS5.
