Natto wins new fans far beyond Japan

TOKYO — The traditional Japanese dish natto is gaining popularity overseas.

Exports of fermented glutinous soybeans hit an all-time high of ¥1.9 billion ($12.8 million) in 2023, according to the Finance Ministry. Videos showing how to eat natto are circulating on social networks. Retailers are developing new ways to promote the food — often described as a politely acquired taste.
