Nippon Steel outlines upgrades to two U.S. Steel mills amid buyout opposition

TOKYO — Nippon Steel plans to invest $1.3 billion to upgrade two existing steel plants in the United States, as the Japanese company tries to win support for a $14 billion takeover bid that faces opposition from the United Steelworkers union.

The plan announced Thursday includes two capital investments aimed at expanding operations at US Steel plants.
