Shigeru Ishiba chosen as Japan’s new prime minister by Diet

TOKYO — Shigeru Ishiba, the new leader of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party, was elected the country's 102nd prime minister in a vote in the lower and upper houses on Tuesday, the first day of a short parliamentary session marred by protests from opposition parties.

Ishiba's victory over opposition party candidates was ensured by the LDP and its coalition partner Komeito having enough votes in both chambers of the Diet. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi later announced a new line-up of government ministers, including Katsunobu Kato as finance minister, Takeshi Iwaya as foreign minister and Gen Nakatani as defense minister. Hayashi is a member of the cabinet of Ishiba's predecessor, Fumio Kishida.
