Shinjiro Koizumi top pick to replace Kishida as Japan’s next leader: poll

TOKYO — Former Japanese environment minister Shinjiro Koizumi has emerged as the most popular choice to replace outgoing Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, according to a Nikkei poll this week.

Broadcaster Nikkei and TV Tokyo conducted polls on Wednesday and Thursday asking who is the best choice to become the next leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and eventually take over as prime minister. Kishida announced last week that he will leave the post of party chairman.
