South Korea pension fund in crisis as aging outpaces reform

SEOUL — South Korea's pension system is facing an existential threat as baby boomers retire and the birth rate falls to new lows, depleting the national fund for decades.

Last year, the future of the national pension fund came back into focus as the Ministry of Health and Welfare predicted it would start running in deficit in 2041 and dry up by 2055 if reforms are not made.
