South Korea to certify EV batteries after blaze ignites fears

SEOUL — South Korea will begin certifying the safety of electric vehicle batteries under a set of regulations announced Friday to address growing concerns about battery fires and keep the country's booming EV industry on track.

The move comes after an EV exploded in an apartment complex's garage in August, prompting the evacuation of hundreds of residents. After the incident, extensive discussions were held between the government and the auto industry.
