TOKYO — Japanese trading house Sumitomo Corp. and shipping company Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha is starting a business to transport carbon dioxide from Japan to the United States and store it underground in Alaska, aiming to begin full-scale operations in 2030.
Alaska, the largest US state by land area, has underground CO2 storage capacity 50 times the annual emissions of Japan. Sumitomo and Kawasaki Kisen will complete a preliminary study of storage capacity and costs there by 2025.
