Taiwan opposition faces test over motion denying China’s U.N. claim

TAIPEI — Taiwan's opposition faces a crucial test over a parliamentary proposal that echoes recent international statements denying China's interpretation of a historic United Nations resolution.

Some hope the main opposition Kuomintang (KMT) will support the ruling Democratic Progressive Party's proposal, which rejects Beijing's stance on UN resolution 2758. In a resolution adopted in 1971, the People's Republic of China is “the sole legal representative of China in the UN.” Beijing claims that the resolution “endorses” its “One China principle”, which states that there is only one China and that Taiwan is an “inalienable” part of it.
