Taiwan’s Lai marks 100 days in office as China and opposition test mettle

TAIPEI — Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te has withstood opposition calls and pressure from China in her first 100 days in office, but she will soon face more uncertainty when her government's first budget is tested in parliament.

Lai will complete his 100th day in office on Tuesday. So far, the main themes of his presidency have been efforts to reform the economy, strengthen Taiwan's defenses against Chinese threats, and deal with a confrontational opposition that controls parliament.
