Taiwan’s Lai visits island off China, pledging both peace and defense

TAIPEI — Taiwan wants to “continue its democratic life.” [and] President Lai Ching-te said on Friday that he rejected being ruled by the Chinese Communist Party during a visit to the island, which has been the focus of Beijing's growing sea pressure.

At the same time, he insisted that Taiwan “fervently loves peace” and hopes for “peaceful development across the Taiwan Strait.”
