U.S. national security adviser has rare meeting with top China general

TOKYO — U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan met with Zhang Youxia, vice chairman of China's Central Military Commission, on Thursday, reaffirming the importance of communication between the rival powers' armed forces.

Concluding a three-day visit to Beijing aimed at stabilizing strained ties, Sullivan stressed that both countries share a responsibility to prevent rivalry from escalating into conflict or confrontation, according to the White House.
