TOKYO — Dozens of Japanese cities are selling metal from the ashes of cremated remains, a Nikkei investigation finds, amid growing calls to introduce regulations for the process.

Most of the more than 1.5 million people who die in Japan each year are cremated. But while the law covers larger bone fragments, usually claimed by families, the handling of remains and who is entitled to them are still legal gray areas.
