TOKYO — Former Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba is set to succeed Fumio Kishida as Japan's next prime minister after the ruling Liberal Democratic Party won the presidential election on Friday.

In his 38-year political career, the 67-year-old banker-turned-politician, a longtime aspirant, has focused on security issues and the revival of Japan's rural communities.
