TOKYO — Former Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba is set to succeed Fumio Kishida as Japan's next prime minister after the ruling Liberal Democratic Party won the presidential election on Friday.

The 67-year-old banker-turned-politician, a longtime aspirant, has spent his 38-year political career focusing on security issues and revitalizing Japan's rural communities.
